It all started with an IKEA table.
Our journey began in the back of a manga cafe in Melbourne, Australia. Our first "campus" in 2006 was a storeroom barely big enough for a single IKEA table, four stools, and a whiteboard.
That tiny storeroom evolved into a full floor in the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, teaching everyone from Apple geniuses to news anchors. We spent over a decade perfecting the art of making Japanese culture accessible, engaging, and—most importantly—fun.
Then, the world changed.
When the pandemic pushed our classrooms online, we discovered we weren't just teaching people in downtown Melbourne anymore. We were reaching students in the suburbs, the rural outbacks, and even introverts who found they learned best in their pyjamas with a cat on their lap.
We realized that if we could bridge the distance across the Australian continent, we could bridge it anywhere.
And that brings us to Canada.
Japanese Canada was born from the success of Japanese Australia. We saw a kindred spirit in the Great White North—a multicultural community with a deep appreciation for Japanese culture, but often separated by vast distances and snowy commutes.
We’ve taken everything we learned from 15+ years of face-to-face and digital teaching in Australia and tailored it for the Canadian lifestyle.
Whether you’re in a high-rise in Toronto, a cabin in BC, or a home office in Halifax, you now have access to the same proven methods, passionate teachers, and community-first approach that started in that little manga cafe.
The goal is the same: to be the bridge between Japan and your world—wherever you happen to call home.
